Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Aunt.
Marjorie Jane Fitzgerald, 93, of Englewood, Florida died on Friday, September 29 at A Family Affair Assisted Living where she was loved and taken care of for 12 years. She was born in Alberta, Canada to Charles and Elona Stobaugh.
Marjorie met John Patrick Fitzgerald and they were married in Detroit in 1950. They resided in Roseville, Michigan. Together they raised seven children.
In 1972, Pat took an early retirement at the age of 52, and retired to Florida with all seven children and a sailboat. They located in this area because Marjorie’s parents had made a home in North Port. They soon built a home in Englewood, Florida. Marjorie was a wife, homemaker and mother. She loved reading, traveling, camping, cooking, shopping, singing, sharing her family story and spending time with her family. Her husband Pat died in 2001.
Marjorie was a wonderful mother. She was a good listener, and always knew the right thing to say, or when to say nothing at all. Often times it was a note or a letter left for us to find. Sometimes it was daily phone conversations. Often it was just a chat in a quiet place to talk about your dreams and goals and hear her encouraging words. She was always there to support us and cared deeply for all her children. She mourned the death of her son Dan who was taken too soon.
We are sad that she suffered with dementia for many years. It was frustrating as we watched her mind and general health decline. We questioned many times why God did not take her home sooner. We put her in God’s hands. Even though we knew that she could no longer communicate with us or knew who we were, there were those moments that she would open her eyes, smile and let us know she was still there. We cherished those moments and maybe that was God’s plan.
We are grateful for the wonderful care that she was given by Jeanne Walton and her caregivers. They gave the best of care and made their house a home where she was surrounded with love – even though at times it was challenging!
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband, son Daniel, and son-in-law Bruce Whitehead. She is survived by her sister Caroline Reid of Clinton Township, Michigan. Her seven children - Gena Whitehead (Bruce), Meg Comstock (Tim), Mike Fitzgerald (Laura), Cristina Walton (John), Carrie Dillmore (PJ), and Sean Fitzgerald (Jeannie). Her ten grandchildren - Andy Whitehead (Melisa), Bryan McCurry, Kara McCurry (Josh), Kyle Fitzgerald, Jayna Concepcion (Robert), Lee Walton, Jordan Strammer (Travis), William Dillmore (Gabi), Charlie Dillmore, and Matt Mcree (Christina). Thirteen great grandchildren - Nate Whitehead, Aurora McCurry, Brayden McCurry, Xander Leonard, Ryder Leonard, Kaley Fitzgerald, Glen Fitzgerald, Emory Concepcion, Marlena Concepcion, Adrianna, Michael and Gianna Mcree, and Wesley Strammer.
A memorial service will be held at Placida Road Church of God, 5225 Placida Rd., Englewood, Fl at 11 a.m. She will lay at rest with her husband at Englewood Cemetery. Donations can be made to The Friends of Elsie Quirk Library, Lemon Bay Historical Society, or Englewood Sunrise Rotary for care of the Englewood Cemetery.
