HENDERSON, Georgia A. 86 of Englewood, passed away peacefully, Monday, September 16, 2013 surrounded by her loving family at Hospice of Dayton. She was born February 23, 1927 in Lewisburg (Preble County), Ohio a daughter of Lawrence B. and Mary Grace (nee Blackford) Helton, who preceded her in death. They moved to Dayton and she grew up on Oak Street. She was a graduate of Stivers High School and enjoyed working as a jewelry buyer at Rikes Dept. Store in the 1940’s. Georgia met her husband Al, who survives her, at an open air dance at Forest Park after WW II. They married in 1948 and have celebrated 65 years of marriage. They were blessed with four daughters and their spouses, Cindy Henderson & Bob Crawford of AZ, Sue Henderson of Cincinnati, Sharon & Glenn Fluegee of WI, Sande & Dave Roberts of NC, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Nancy Haddix of Miamisburg. She was Treasurer of Phi Kappa Chi and established lifelong friendships with best friends Pat, Dottie, Phyllis and Betty Lou. She remained active at Curves and was an avid bowler well into her 80’s, bowling for over 50 years. She attended the Englewood and Union United Methodist Churches for many years. She was active in fund raisers and met good friends Don, Nell, George and Edna Rose. She loved to travel. Our family took memorable family trips to California and Canada. She loved the mountains and took lots of pictures from the car window. Our family cherishes memories of summers at Stenger’s Lake and Cedar Point. Georgia also enjoyed trips to the Badlands and Yellowstone with Al, as well as trips to Las Vegas. There were winter trips to Florida with Al and the Gang. She loved walking on the beach and collecting pelicans. She enjoyed raising her four daughters and maintaining the family home on Malvern Avenue. She was active in the children’s lives, serving as Brownie Leader and as president and treasurer of the PTA. Our parents gave us the freedom to develop into the people we are, and set limits to keep us safe and secure. Sunday’s were spent with Grandparents, and we enjoyed many Sunday dinners together. Our mother loved to decorate for the season. She collected Santa’s and liked to watch the lights on her Christmas tree. Mom has a talent for organizing and record keeping. The family always joked that she could retrieve any bit of information. She kept lists of Christmas presents we were given when we were growing up. She was good with words, and did crossword puzzles and watched Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune every day. We were always amused that she could pick any restaurant and that it was always MCL. Mom was blessed with excellent health for 85 years. She faced her late in life health issues with courage and determination that few others could match. We love our Mom dearly and our memories of her will go on forever. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME ENGLEWOOD CHAPEL, 675 West Wenger Road, Friday, September 20, 2013 starting at 10:00 am, followed by a Celebration of her life at 11:00 am with Pastor’s Jeffrey Blair and George Sidwell Presiding. Burial will follow in Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery. Contributions if desired may be made to the Englewood or Union United Methodist Churches in memory of Georgia.
