On September 30th, 2019, Amanda Skeean — loving wife and mother — passed away at the age of 42. Amanda was born on June 26th, 1977 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She received her nursing license from Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute in December of 2002. After finding her passion for nursing while working as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at a local nursing home, she served a wide array of patients as a Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Flight, Pediatric and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) nurse. She also helped launch the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Widely recognized throughout her career for her expertise, compassion and dedication to others, she was awarded Preceptor of the Year and Nurse of the Year.
In summer of 1994, she met her best friend, David Hernandez, and together they raised one daughter, Angelyque Hernandez. On November 29th, 2003, she married her best friend and embarked on an exciting life of mutual respect, admiration, adventure and fulfillment.
Amanda pursued many passions, including the ocean, beach, sharks, Halloween and rescuing myriad animals, both domestic and exotic. She loved expressing herself through her tattoos and anything purple. She found many smiles in fantasy, minions, shoes, makeup and her unique inappropriate sense of humor. She held a special place in her heart for her friends who became her family. Finally, she had a very special love for her car that transcended most loves — in fact, she said it completed her soul.
Amanda was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Lenora Skeean; mother, Sharon Lawton; and father, Terrence Skeen. She is survived by her husband, David Hernandez; daughter, Angelyque Hernandez; Mary and Kevin Skeean; Pauline and Howard (Butch) Skeean; Judy Skeean Pierson; Bruce and Pat Doty; and many beloved family members and friends in New Mexico and Texas.
In lieu of a funeral, a private Celebration of Life will be held in Rio Rancho, New Mexico at 11 am on October 26th, 2019.
Amanda always said, "love learn and laugh as if every day is your last. You never know when it will be." She lived very true to these words through her own actions and adventures. May we continue to honor her by living our lives with this same passion.
