With hearts full of love and gratitude, the family of Barbara Given announces her peaceful passing on April 22, 2026, at the age of 87. She is survived by her beloved children, Michael, Gregory, and Julie and her three grandchildren: Jessica, Riley, and Landon.
She was a woman of deep Catholic faith, gracious spirit, and enduring elegance—a true embodiment of Aloha in everything she did.
Barbara was born into a prominent Boston family and raised with a strong sense of purpose, community, and tradition that would shape her remarkable life. She carried those values with her wherever she went, expressing them through kindness, loyalty, and a quiet strength that grounded her family.
She pursued her education at the University of Hawaii, where she met her husband, Captain Philip R. Given, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. They shared more than 50 years of marriage and raised three children together, creating a close, faith-filled family. Later in life, they made their home in San Diego.
As a homemaker, Barbara poured herself wholeheartedly into her family with unwavering dedication. She was a strong woman—her husband’s greatest supporter and her children’s most steadfast anchor. She was always present: helping with homework, guiding with gentle wisdom, and making every holiday and family gathering feel special and memorable.
Barbara was known as a wonderful cook, filling her home with not only delicious meals but also laughter and conversation. Social and welcoming by nature, she loved hosting friends and cherished lifelong, loyal friendships. Her home was always open, and everyone felt better for having spent time with her.
She had a true love of travel and adventure, embracing everything from international journeys to simple camping trips. Sailing, camping, and time outdoors created lasting memories for her family and held a special place in her heart. She had a lifelong love of Hawaiian culture, the flowers, beach and ocean. She also dearly loved her cats and dogs, who brought her constant comfort and joy.
Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. Barbara attended Mass faithfully, raised her children in the Church, and witnessed each of them baptized and confirmed—gifts she considered among her greatest blessings. Her faith shaped her compassion, perseverance, and the grace with which she approached every season of life.
Above all, Barbara will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the deep love she had for her family.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the traditions she created, and the steadfast love she gave so freely.
She will be profoundly missed and forever cherished.
