Earl Funk will be remembered as a charitable, humorous, stubborn, resilient, and deeply thoughtful man whose presence left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His cheerful spirit and boisterous laugh could light up any room, and his warmth was felt by friends, family, and community alike.
Born and raised in Stockton, California, Earl grew up with a love for life and connection. He attended Saint Mary’s High School, where he enjoyed playing football and formed lifelong values of teamwork and perseverance that would carry him throughout his life.
At just 17 years old, Earl enlisted in the United States Navy, serving four years as a cryptological technician. His service reflected both his dedication and strength of character. Following his time in the military, he built a successful career as an industrial salesman, working diligently for 40 years before retiring at the age of 62. In retirement, Earl devoted himself to meaningful work, helping lay the foundations for the Elders of the San Pasqual Reservation—a contribution that stands as a testament to his generosity and commitment to others.
Earl shared six children with his former wife, Marietta: Alicia, Tara, Stephen, Bryan, Chris, and Jeffrey. His legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
He had a zest for life that showed in his many personal interests. Earl loved to go dancing—especially in the company of pretty ladies—and was an avid fan of college basketball, passionately cheering for his favorite team, UConn. He found peace and happiness near the ocean in Pismo, one of his favorite places, and enjoyed simple pleasures like sunbathing on his porch swing while listening to his favorite tunes.
A generous member of his community, Earl supported numerous charities and contributed to the Escondido Senior Center, always looking for ways to give back and uplift others.
One of Earl’s proudest accomplishments was his 46 years of sobriety, a reflection of his resilience and determination. He also took great pride in helping make “Della’s Rez” a place to call home, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and belonging.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Elizabeth Hospice for their compassionate care and guidance during Earl’s final moments; to Dr. Dan Calac with Indian Health, Horizon Medical Equipment, and McLeod Mortuary for their support and services; and to Jeffrey, Jackie, John, and EV for their unwavering dedication, providing around-the-clock care and companionship.
Earl had a way of making everyone feel welcome. He would greet others with a beaming smile, often singing, “Good morning to you!” and would send them off with an exaggerated wave goodbye—gestures that will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Though he is no longer with us, Earl Funk’s spirit, laughter, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
