Ida May Angel Hanson, of Escondido, California, passed away peacefully with her family on May 7, 2025, at the age of 96. Ida was a Native American born June 1, 1928, into the loving arms of Mabel Lawson Angel and Jesse Roy Angel, in the beautiful mountains of Mesa Grande, California. Ida led a life marked by love, warmth and unwavering devotion to her family.
Ida’s journey through life was defined by her loving and cheerful nature, and her beautiful smile, which remained a constant source of comfort and joy to those around her. Growing up Ida and her family split their time between the ranch in Mesa Grande and the house in Escondido.
Ida shared her journey with her siblings: Mark Angel, Irene Angel- Rayle, Sydney Angel, Calvin “Tiny” Angel and Marlene Angel – Eddy all of Mesa Grande and Escondido.
In 1930, they brought her grandmother, Louise Scholder Lawson of Mesa Grande, to live with them. This helped imprint Native American customs into their lives. Ida held with great pride her birthright as a Native American from Mesa Grande.
In 1944, Ida married Edward F. Cardinal of Escondido, California on March 17, a union that lasted until 1950. Her dedication and warmth as a mother were evident, as she strived to create a home filled with love and support for their daughter Linette May Cardinal born April, 1946.
Her passions revolved around her family, with whom she shared cherished moments and created countless memories. Ida’s hidden passion was movies and movie stars, she would spend hours
reading about them and sneaking away on a hot summer night with Linette to the local drive-in to watch them on the big screen.
As a testament to the love she radiated, Ida welcomed twin granddaughters: Cheryl Cardinal of Fallbrook, California and Cherie Cardinal- Schouteren of Wake Forest, North Carolina and in 1990,a great granddaughter, Adrianna Cardinal of Fallbrook, California. Ida remained a beloved figure, remembered fondly by all who know her.
Ida’s life will be commemorated with graveside services on May 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido, services will be officiated by Reverend Dan Klender. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating her remarkable life and bid farewell to a loving soul who brought light to the lives she touched.
In our parting, we take solace in the words of a loving and merciful God: “We entrust our sister to your mercy. You loved her greatly in this life; now that she is freed from all its cares, give her happiness and peace forever.” These words echo the hope that Ida is now embraced by eternal peace.
