Born Alvin J. Anderson on April 13,1921. Since everyone who knew him called him "J," he later officially changed his name to simply Jay Anderson.
Jay graduated from Lane Technical High School, Chicago, Illinois, Class of 1939. He attended the University of Michigan and Northwestern University, graduated from officer training school with the U.S. Navy. He attained the Navy rank of Lieutenant-Junior Grade, and served as a pilot in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands during World War II until the end of the War in the Pacific. He remained an officer in the Naval Reserves for several years following the War.
Prior to and following his service in WWII Jay worked as an insurance broker for over 50 years for large firms in both San Diego and in Los Angeles and later with his own brokerage until his retirement in his 70s.
Jay was a long-time member of Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Poway, California, and was married to his wife Clara Blondine Beach Scalice in June of 1996 in that church. He was previously married to Ivy Fern Carlson of San Diego from March, 1968 until her death in September, 1994.
Jay was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster to several troops of boys. He had many interests and hobbies throughout his life including carpentry and electronics.
He is survived by his wife Blondine, stepson Ronald Carlson, stepdaughter Janet Beach, grandchildren Jon Carlson and Anna Carlson Joslin, and great-grandchildren Jack, Peter, and Kate Joslin
Jay was cared for exceptionally well during the last year and a half of his life by the staff of Villa Pomerado Hospital in Poway, CA. His family wishes to thank everyone there for doing their jobs with such compassion and professionalism .
