I miss you Scott

In memory of my dear nephew Scott; There are no words to say when we loose a family member. I feel very privileged to have been able to be there and take part in your farewell. I had no idea you were so ill when we were there in May. We loved having you drive us to San Diego and the time we got to spend with you, we really enjoyed the time we had. Now my dear nephew you are at peace and no longer suffering and in pain. We love you and will miss your smile and laugh.

Thanks for taking such good care of us, taking us everywhere in the truck, and giving us the gift of being your trusted companions. We will miss you but we will be cared for.

I woke up crying again. At night Schooner takes your place for our long talks about life. Schooner is the first face I see in the morning.Although Schooner is as close as I can get to you for now,It hurts. You have always said my heart is safe with you.You took my heart to heaven with you. Someday Ill be there for you and my heart. I love you and I miss you

I knew alot longer than most about Scotts condition and had more time to prepare, when that day came, I realized how unprepared I really was. When Scott passed he took my heart with him. Thats ok with me. The last thing we did together at home was put a cv joint in my truck. It took 3 days for both of us to do it. We fell asleep under my truck on the ground. We talked and clowned each other. I am so sad and heart broken that Scottie is gone. I am thankful he is no longer in pain and suffering. I know you are in heaven Scottie. Your wishes have and always be top priority. I am thankful for the time we had together. You made life very interesting.Schooner, blue, and cotton are with me, right by my side.always.We are working through this together.  There is nothing so sacred as honor, there is nothing as loyal as love. I love and miss you Scott.

Scott and I became neighbors when I moved to Aguanga two years ago. Although we were both private, cautious and maybe a little suspicious of others, we very quickly became friends. We talked a lot over the two years. We talked about our pasts, the good times and the bad times, and what we had learned along the way. We talked about past loves and our children. Although we came from very different backgrounds and had taken different paths in life, we had some common experiences and successes along with similar and significant challenges and setbacks. He had come to terms with his past and had found some peace of mind and was good with the man he had become. He helped me get closer to that state of being and to put things in the proper perspective. And for that, I will always be grateful. 

He was a hard worker and was generous with his time. He was always one of the first to help when and where he could and that was almost always. He had a thirst for knowledge and was interested in a surprising variety of topics. He could fix just about anything because he had such a curiosity for how things worked. I remember him watching me struggle with some repair work and telling me “Remember you have to be smarter than what you are trying to fix and/or the tool you are trying to use” and then laughing when he knew he had gotten under my skin a little. But we could do that with each other, like friends do. He was brutally honest and did not suffer fools easily. Even when he most certainly was feeling weak over the past few months, he seemed to still be one of the strongest people around.
 
So, with that in mind and with a history of dusting himself off after taking a major fall (literally or figuratively), I and others hoped and probably assumed he would be able to recover and get back home. But this time, he did not make it. The big heart he revealed to many of us through his actions just had no more to give.  

So as I grieve for the loss of my neighbor, I will also make a point of being thankful for the relatively short time I was able to get to know and hang out with him. And, no matter what, I choose to remember the person he was rather than the person he wasn't. I will remember him cruising by in the Dually on his way to or from his or my place with his canine companions Schooner, Blue, and Cotton by his side. Above all, I will remember him as a close friend and one of the most authentic and truly good people I have ever known.
