Martha Anne Clague

June 19, 1923 – November 26, 2013

Our mother was born and raised in Douglas, AZ. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart in Menlo Park, CA, and high school in Douglas, AZ. She went to Mills College in Oakland, CA. She met and married J. William Clague in 1943. Mom and Dad lived in San Francisco; Modesto; Des Moines, Iowa; Stockton and Murphys before settling to Eureka in 1958. Mom was an active member of the Humboldt-Del Norte Medical Auxiliary, Christ Episcopal Church and the Humboldt Arts Council, serving in various areas of leadership and volunteering.

Mom had a wonderful sense of humor and always made other people feel welcome and comfortable. Her smile was contagious. She was a friend to everyone and truly the best mother we ever had!

Mom is preceded in death by husband J. William Clague, M.D., parents Nicolo and Martha Alessi, sisters Jean (Runner) and Nicola. She is survived by loving children Carolyn (Peter) Pappas, Katherine, James W. Jr. (Vicki), John and David (Luanne). Grandchildren Allyson (Horsley) and Nicholas Pappas, Jackson Clague, and Jason and Angela Clague. Great granddaughters Ashton and Alessi Horsley.

FAMILY CHAIN

We knew little that morning,

God was going to call your name,

In life we loved you dearly,

In death we do the same,

It broke our hearts to lose you,

You did not go alone.

For part of us went with you

The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,

Your love is still our guide,

And though we cannot see you,

You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,

And nothing seems the same,

But as God calls us one by one,

The chain will link again.
