
May 3, 1947- October 3, 2011 Devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A resident of Eureka, Carlo passed away this past Monday evening. Age 64 years and five months, he was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mercedes Giovannetti, grandparents Delmar and Evelyn Whipple and Giacundo and Filede Giovannetti. Carlo was an enrolled Tolowa Dee-ni' member of the Smith River Rancheria. He is survived by his wife Pam Giovannetti of Eureka, his brother Joseph (Carla) Giovannetti, and his sister Marie (David) Chandler, all of Eureka. He is also survived by his children, John Giovannetti, Kim Giovannetti (Frank Hostler), Marci Williams (Matt) and Kelly McVay; grandchildren David Williams, Tori Williams, Kortney Williams, Heather DeLosada, Nadine Starritt, Joseph Bowie, Jacob Bowie, David Hostler, Anthony Hostler and Tehya Hostler; and great grandchildren Elijah DeLosada and Cole Bettiga, all of Eureka. He was also preceded in death by his great uncles Elmer Whipple, Louis Whipple, Charley Whipple, Andy Whipple, Jimmy Brown, Westford Brown, Andy Brown, great aunts Isabel (Whipple) Pomeroy. He is also survived by his great aunts Elinor Richards of Smith River and Mabel Smith of Crescent City and many cousins. Carlo was a descendent of Tolowa Dee-ni' Howonquet headman Joseph Hostler (U-hosh-eth) and and his wife Lucinda (Dru-li-tra) of Big Flat. Carlo was a U.S. Army combat veteran who fought as an artilleryman in the Republic of South Vietnam in II Corps (Pleiku region) in 1967-68. He received his basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and his Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Carlo received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He attained the rank of Private First Class. He was Honorably Discharged. Carlo attended the Eureka City Schools of Linclon Elementary, George C. Jacobs Jr. High and was a member of the Eureka High School class of 1966. He excelled in athletics, letting in both basketball and track at Jacobs Jr. High, where his 1963 sprint records of :37.8 for 330 yards and :14.3 for the 120 low hurdles were never broken. He was a member of the 1963 Eureka High "B" 440 yard relay team which won the Humboldt-Del Norte County championship. He was also a Eureka Babe Ruth League All-Star in 1963. After the war Carlo returned to Eureka first working in the woods, at Cal Kirk Landscaping, before going to work for Louisiana Pacific Corporation in Samoa. He also played for the American Legion Post 212 basketball team. For the next 37 years he worked for LP and the corporations which followed LP in ownership, helping keep the Samoa bleach plant operations dialed in. Carlo's greatest joy was his family. He loved shuttling grandchildren to and from school and sporting events and watching his grandsons Joseph and Jacob play youth football and granddaughter Nadine play volleyball for St. Bernards High. He was an accomplished Domestic Engineer, having mastered tasks related to the dishwashing, laundering, vacuuming and grocery shopping. He loved his Dallas Cowboys and celebrated the glory days of his QB Roger Staubach, His favorite baseball players were Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial and Sandy Koufax. He loved Jimi Hendrix and the Electric Experience and while he complained about it, he also enjoyed what he called "putzing" around the house. His Christmas Spaghetti sauce was the stuff legends are made of. He was the videographer at family events. Carlo liked trying his luck at the Blue Lake Casino, where he was a moderate winner.
