He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on Iwo Jima. Mac was honored to attend the second Honor Flight and was escorted by his grandson. He graduated from Florida Southern College and then went on to receive his Master’s Degree from Indiana University. He taught Art and English at Tell City High School for 13 years. He also taught English and Biblical Literature at Harrison High School, eventually serving as the English Department Head and was the Supervisor of English for the Evansville School Corporation. Mac introduced the class of biblical literature to the EVSC. He was the Supervisor for Student Teacher Evaluation at University of Southern Indiana. Mac served as past President of Phi Delta Kappa. He was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ where he served on the Board of Christian Education, taught Sunday school, was on the church council, sang in the choir, was involved in summer bible school, and played Judas in The Last Supper Tableau for 37 years. Mac co-authored a series of vocabulary-building books for Houghton-Mifflin and wrote a three-act play called, “Give Us A King.” He served as a substitute teacher at Signature School until the age of 90. Mac, always active, was an artist and avid gardener. He enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Mac loved his family and his students.
Mac was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Deal, Arleta Mathews, Rosaleen Wright, and Iola Stewart; and brother, Wesley McRae.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Georgia (Schriefer) McRae; sons, Lee McRae of Evansville and Noel McRae (Robin) of Georgetown, Indiana; grandchildren, Alex McRae, Erin McRae-Stoops, Brent McRae, and Gus McRae; and sister, Marcialea Wasson.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday February 15, 2020 at Bethel United Church of Christ officiated by Rev. Carlos Haskins. Burial will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit on Friday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Alexander East Chapel.
