Born in Posey County, IN on June 25, 1937, he was the son of Robert Malcolm Hancock and Geraldine Craig Gries. Billy attended Culver Elementary School and graduated from Bosse High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy, active and reserves, stationed in Hawaii and Adak, Alaska. He was introduced to fishing as a toddler by his grandmother Hancock, and remained an avid fisherman all his life. A highlight of that, were his two trips to Alaska with friends. The first trip bringing home 200 lbs. of Salmon, Halibut and Ling Cod.
He retired from CSX Railroad after having worked for 39 years for several different railroads from the same location in Evansville. When he moved to Connecticut in 2016 with his life partner of 24 years, he joined the Haddam Neck Fire Department as a volunteer where he also played Santa Claus at their Christmas parties. Since he came to Connecticut with his unique southern accent, he was told not to talk too much as Santa because the children would know it was “Billy.” He was a talented artist, gifting friends and loved ones with his, sometimes, customized drawings.
In Evansville he leaves behind his son, William M. Hancock (Chris); daughter, Lori Hancock Hill (David); grandchildren, Mark Murty, Amanda Murty Gates, Nicholas Luttrell, Kelsey Luttrell Head (Brandon); great-grandchildren, Lainie Grubbs, Lily, Lucy and Ike Murty and Olivia and Eli Luttrell; his beloved brother, Robert Hancock, nephew, Kevin Hancock; niece, Cayla Hancock Reese; and beloved cousins and friends.
Billy also leaves behind his partner of 24 years, Charlotte Craig Dahman; her children who loved him as a father, Cheryl Dahman Davis (Robert), Camilla Dahman Scott (Peter), Corinne Beth Dahman, all of Connecticut and Raymond Craig “Bucky” Dahman (Jennifer) of Gilbert, AZ; grandchildren, Calef Davis (Raelyn), A.J. Davis, Alex and Colby Scott; great-grandson, Nash B. Davis, all of Connecticut, and grandsons, Tanner and Tucker Dahman of Gilbert, AZ.
Friends are invited to come and share their favorite memories and stories of Billy at a special Memorial Service that will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at Alexander North Chapel with Celebrant Carrie Hatchett officiating.
