It is with great sadness that the family of Alfred D. Fritz, 80, of Newburgh, IN announces his passing on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. He was born in Pike County, IN to the late Virgil and Elma Fritz.
Alfred was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was known to be a man of his word, a hard worker, and a true friend. He was a member of Evansville Masonic Lodge #64 for over 50 years. He retired as a locomotive engineer from the CSX/L&N Railroad.
Alfred led a rich and meaningful life. Growing up working on his family’s dairy farm in Pike County as the youngest of 14 children, he then moved to Wichita, KS to help build B52 bombers for Boeing, before returning home to Indiana to become a railroader. He was a master story teller, who enjoyed sharing stories of his family, friends, and coworkers. He never missed an opportunity to pull a prank, tell a joke, or recall a funny story. You always left an Alfred encounter feeling a little lighter, as he had an amazing ability to lift spirits with his humor. He was the entertainer in our family. Everyone would be enthralled for hours listening to his stories. However for all of his humor and entertainment, those luckiest to know him best, knew that his best qualities were his kind heart and sensitive soul. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
A widower from his first marriage with Roberta Kay Fritz (1939-1979), Alfred and Kay are sadly missed by their only daughter, Eva Lynn Milling. Alfred is survived by his wife and best friend of 32 years, Martha Hay. Alfred will be lovingly remembered by his son-in-law Kirk Milling (husband of Lynn Milling) and his two grandchildren, Scott Alan Milling and Sandra Kay Milling. He will also be fondly remembered by his step-daughters Stephanie Hay and Michelle Barnhart (Martha’s children) and his two grandchildren Danielle and Hillary Barnhart (Michelle’s children). Alfred is also survived by his two great-granddaughters Emelia and Isabella Milling (Scott and his wife Amanda Milling’s children). Surviving siblings include Don Fritz, Eva Jewel Baumgardner, and Patty Ann Clem.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Alexander East Chapel officiated by Celebrant Carrie Hatchett, with burial in Spurgeon Cemetery. Friends may visit 4-7 pm on Friday at the funeral home, where a Masonic Memorial service will be held at 6 pm by Evansville Masonic Lodge #64.
