

He served in the US Army during WWII as a tank gunner holding the rank of Corporal. He spent time in Germany, France, and Belgium. Archie retired from Whirlpool as a machinist at age 60. He spent the next 37 years doing what he loved, which was hunting, fishing, and building things with his hands. He was well known on his block as the “tomato man” and sold tomatoes in his backyard. Archie was a good Christian, and loved his church and family.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 66 years, Edith Mae (Willett) Ward; brothers, Charles, Howard, Thurston, and Alton; and sister, Ruth Phelps.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Vordtriede (Bill), Robert Ward (Opal), and Wanda Schultz; grandchildren, Michael Blemker (Emily), Michelle Graman (Curt), Larry Hodge, Wendy Ward, Bobby Ward (Phoebe), April Brown, Karen Latham, Jamie Young (Terri), and Tara Pierce; nineteen great grandchildren; and twenty eight great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road, Evansville, IN, officiated by Pastor James Gibson, with burial to follow in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024 at the funeral home.
