Arnold Joseph Egnew, 86, departed this life on October 20th, 2020. Passing on quietly during his morning nap at The Heritage Center, he was afforded a peaceful rest after a long and fruitful life. He has now reunited the love of his life his wife of 66 years, Sharon (Robertson) Egnew.
Born August 26th, 1934, Arnold spent his formative years growing up on Walnut Road on Evansville's north side. The oldest of four children born to Jesse and Anna Mae (Norvell) Egnew, Arnold had two brothers, Robert - d.2011 (Kathy), Charles (Doris) and a sister Linda (Kenneth - d.2016) Gibson. He began working at the age of thirteen, by caddying for the golfers at the Evansville Country Club.
Arnold was an industrious but shy young man. Coaxed into tagging along on a double date by his friend Al Walker in 1950, he met Sharon, who would be the only girl he would ever love. After a brief but steady courtship lasting a few months, they eloped at the age of sixteen. A Justice of the Peace of Georgia married them in the dawn hours of February 22nd, 1951. They remained constantly together until her passing.
Arnold and Sharon were soon blessed in their marriage with three children: Terry Egnew (Mary) of Jasper, Janet Scotten (Tony) of Indianapolis, and Scott Egnew (Vicki) of Mt. Vernon, who filled their small home on Shelby Avenue on Evansville's southeast side with noise and laughter. They grew up quickly and had families of their own, bringing added joy to Arnold and Sharon’s lives.
Grandchildren include, Anthony Scotten (Alicia), Amy Hughes (Adam), Jesse Egnew (Lane), Matthew Egnew, Zachary Egnew (Natasha); great-grandchildren include, Jordan and Jacob Scotten, Parker and Thomas Hughes, Harper and Avery Egnew and Alexander Egnew. Arnold is also survived by loving nieces and nephews, and extended family.
A graduate of the tech program of North High School in 1952, Arnold joined General Tire and remained with them for the next 40 years. He and his brother Robert joined Tri-State Brake and Driveline together in 1996. Arnold retired in 2000.
Arnold had an innate ability to understand mechanisms and automobiles. His expertise was often called upon by family, friends, customers, and co-workers throughout his life. He loved to watch the Indy 500 and NASCAR race, and many in his family wondered if he could have had a successful career as a pit crew manager. Arnold was an avid IU Basketball fan and especially enjoyed listening to Don Fischer’s play by play on radio.
Arnold lived up to his middle name of Joseph and loved by doing - much like the earthly father of Jesus. Ever devoted to his family, he would always be ready to lend a hand, work with complete diligence on whatever project or errand needed his attention, spend time with his grandchildren, or pilot the car on countless family trips over the decades. The love he showed his wife, his family, and all who knew him was quiet, constant, and abiding - a continuous presence in all of our lives. We take solace in his passing, knowing that he is with us still in prayer and that one day we will be in his loving presence again.
Due to covid-19, only family will be present when Arnold is interred at Alexander Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Heritage Center for their excellent care.
