

Bettye L. Thiry, 91, formerly of Evansville, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016, at Lexington Country Place in Lexington, KY. She was born March 30, 1925, in Tell City, IN, to the late Joseph and Nora (Reif) Smith.
She was a retired RN who traveled the country in her profession, and the world as an Air Force wife and mother. She was a graduate of Memorial High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing, and had been employed in supervisory positions at St. Mary’s Medical Center and Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Evansville. She was an IU basketball fan and enjoyed many sports, especially golf, as well as ceramics and playing cards. She was a parishioner at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
Bettye is survived by her son, Paul; former daughter-in-law, Kimberly; and granddaughter, Hannah, all of Lexington, KY; granddaughter, Bailey, of Cincinnati, OH; granddaughter, Lydia (Thiry) Fuson; grandson-in-law, Daniel Fuson; and great-granddaughters, Makenna, Charlotte, and Vivian, all of Cynthiana, KY; sister-in-law, Regina MacGregor of Ann Arbor, MI; niece, Marsha Smith-Gilbert of Traverse City, MI; niece, Sharon Smith of Ann Arbor, MI; nephew, Howard Smith of Jacksonville, FL; nieces, Marilyn Hempfling and Susan Hudson, both of Evansville; as well as many grand-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph G. Thiry; sister, Leona (Smith) Hunt; brothers, Howard, Woodrow, Maurice, John, and Bill Smith; and sister-in-law, Lorene (Hoesli) Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Friday, December 2, 2016, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 North Stockwell Road, officiated by Fr. Zach Etienne, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, and Friday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church.
