

Charles “Chuck” Wendell Stewart, 82, of Evansville, passed away at his home Friday, February 24, 2017. He was born February 20, 1935, in Powderly, KY to the late Courtland and Louise (Jackson) Stewart.
He graduated from Central High School in 1953, and attended Ricks College in Rexburg, ID, where he played football and baseball, Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, UT, and Evansville College, where he graduated in 1959 with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. He completed a master’s degree in education at Western Kentucky in 1961. Chuck began teaching history at North High School in 1961. During his last few years at North, he was an industrial arts teacher coordinating the school’s work study program. Chuck completed his employment with EVSC at Stanley Hall in 1994. He coached golf at North High School for 18 years and for the University of Evansville for two years. He also coached basketball for one year and wrestling for two years, both at North High School. He stayed close to his avid golfers and longtime friends at church. Chuck was on the Indiana High School Golf Association of Directors for two years and won Coach of the Year honors in the Heartland Conference in 1979. Chuck was a very passionate sports fan and loved to watch baseball, basketball, and golf on television, as well as old Western movies. He has been a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 53 ½ years, Barbara (Hobgood) Stewart; sons, Chad (Asta), Cory (Sarah), and Curt Stewart (fiancé, Sarah Singer); grandsons, Alex, Gustav, and Zain; brother, Barry Stewart; sisters, Barbara Layden-Tabor and Phyllis Parker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 8020 Covert Avenue, officiated by Bishop Paul Daines, with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM at Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue.
