Charles (Chuck) Howard Weisling, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Evansville, Indiana on October 1. Chuck was born in 1931 in Evansville, Indiana. He attended Emma Roach Elementary School and then graduated from Central High School in 1949. After high school Chuck worked at a couple jobs in Evansville including Keller Crescent until the Korean War Crisis started. He volunteered for service in the US Navy in 1951 and was stationed in San Diego before heading to Seattle to continue his service as a radioman. It was there that he met the love of his life – Alice Mae Rouleau who was a WAVE also stationed in Seattle. They married in Evansville in 1953 and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Chuck returned to his roots and soon settled on the West Side of Evansville where he and Alice lived for 63 years. During this time Chuck returned to Keller Crescent and later held jobs in various industries in the Evansville area. Chuck was a Lifetime Member of the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department where he proudly served for 21 years. He rose to the rank of Assistant Chief during his tenure. Chuck’s interest in firefighting led him to a long and prosperous career in selling Pierce fire engines all over the tri-state area. This allowed him to combine his career with his love of travel. When Chuck retired from sales he went on to work as the manager of the North Side BMV License Branch in Evansville. He retired (for good?) in 1993. Never one to sit back and take it easy, Chuck began a new career with Sentry Siren selling early warning sirens in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee. He and Alice enjoyed their retirement years “traveling the back roads” and meeting all kinds of wonderful people along the way.
In 2009 when he was actually retired, Chuck worked on one of the most exciting projects of his life. At this time, Evansville was considering an annexation of the WestSide. Chuck was a champion of the WestSide for many, many years. He and several other loyal WestSiders started the grassroots movement West Siders Against Annexation and soon gained a huge group of followers. With hard work and determination, they successfully stopped the annexation of a large area of the WestSide of Evansville. When a push for Consolidation was started, Chuck and his group formed CORE (Citizens Opposed to Reorganization in Evansville). They, too, were able to successfully oppose the proposition. Chuck turned his creative energies into his emerging woodworking hobby. He made stunning woodworking pieces including trinket boxes and gorgeous clocks. He gave many of his treasured pieces to family and others who were special to him.
Chuck will be lovingly missed by all his family. His son, Alan Weisling passed away in 2022. He is survived by his wife (Alice Rouleau Weisling of Evansville), daughters (Linda Weisling Torkington/ Richard Torkington of Mesa Arizona and Janet Weisling Seiler/Eric Seiler of Westside Evansville), grandchildren (Janel Torkington/Isam Alegre of Barcelona Spain and John Torkington/ Taylor Radcliffe of Mesa Arizona) and great-grandson (Olau Torkington Alegre of Barcelona Spain).
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6th, from 5-7 pm at Alexander Funeral Home West, 2100 W Illinois St, Evansville, IN. Alexander’s has a private parking lot accessible during the Fall Festival.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Chuck’s name to Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department. Condolences may be sent to Holiday Village, 1200 W. Buena Vista Road, Apt. 215, Evansville, IN 47710.
