Dick was born in St. Petersburg, FL and grew up in Clearwater, FL with four brothers, Hap (Sally), Jim (Eunice), Tom (Ann) and twin, Ted. He served in the Army during Vietnam. Dick met his wife, Melody, and started a family in Clearwater, FL in 1971. They settled in Evansville in 1976. For most of his career he was an engineer/operator with Local 101, working at Commercial Landscaping Service. Dick enjoyed playing and watching baseball and coaching his childrens’ teams. He was active as a Scout Leader and received the Medal of Merit Award. Dick enjoyed adventurous outings, caving, canoeing, rappelling, camping, picnics at the river with his grandkids and being outdoors.
Dick was preceded in death by parents, Harry Leggett Ankers, Sr. and Dorothy G. Ankers; brother, Harry Leggett, Jr. “Hap”; and son-in-law, Andrew Hills.
Surviving family includes his wife, Melody (Boyd) Ankers; children, Kristyn S. Hills, Jacob Ankers (Amber), and John J. Ankers (Shannon); grandchildren, Aaron, Sarah, Wesley, Joshua, and Jaxon; great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Celeigh and Aiden; numerous nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 17 at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Andy Payton, and will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/funeralstreamusa. The Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will perform military rites. Friends may visit on Sunday, August 16, 2020 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois St., and on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
