He was an Evansville native and graduate of Harrison High School. David has been an avid Atlanta Braves fan for many years and long-time friend of manager Bobby Cox, with whom he spent many weekends at the pool. David had an integral part in the trades that shaped the 1995 World Series team. It was during these sessions that David, the Long family aquatics director, pioneered the “Sit N’ Swill” which continues to be a favored family tradition where he would chastise the rest of us for drinking “Sunday beer” (canned beer). David exclusively drank bottled beer. David had many hobbies. One of his favorites was watching WWE Smackdown with his son, Nicholas. These viewings would often turn into active participation. Holidays with the Longs were notorious for getting loud and rowdy. David and his wife, Missy, enjoyed watching their son, Nicholas, play baseball.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Katherine Long.
He is survived by his wife, Missy Long; son, Nicholas Long; brothers, Mark Long, Mike Long and Don (Donna) Long; nieces, Whitney Long and Kelsey Tingley; and nephews, Andy Long, Brad Long and Clayton Long.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, October 26, 2017, at Alexander East Chapel. Friends may visit Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
