Don G. Bender

Don G. Bender, 74, passed away, Thursday, August 29, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born January 5, 1939, in Evansville to the late Basil and Cora Mae Bender.

He graduated from Bosse High School in 1957 and retired from Whirlpool in June, 2001, after 38 years. He worked part time at Sears for 10 years from September, 1970 until September, 1980. Don served in the Air Force Reserves for 27 years and was a US Coast Guard Auxiliary member for 47 years. He worked Thunder on the Ohio for 22 years and was an amateur radio operator for many years.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie Helt and sister, Patricia Ann Baker.

Don is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Yates (Ron), Evansville, IN; sons, Darren Bender, Chandler, IN, Dan Bender (Jody), Boonville, IN; sister, Dorothy Wanninger, Evansville; several grandchildren; and half-brother, Harold B. Bender, Evansville.

Services will be 2:00PM, Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, with burial following. Friends may visit Thursday from noon until service time at the cemetery chapel.

I remember Don very well from Bosse class of '57. I am sorry to learn of his death, but pleased to learn of his family and his careers. It was a good life, well-lived. My warmest wishes to all of you, his family. Marilyn May Stanonis, Henderson, Ky.

I have many fond memories of when I lived on Columbia Street next door to Don as a child. We had some great adventures such as camping in my back yard using an old quilt as a tent. Having lost touch, it appears that Don went on to have a full and rewarding life.
