

Born in Evansville to Joe and Mary Elizabeth “Sissy” Abernathy, Don attended Rex Mundi High School. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and was later honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Following his service, he worked 26 years at PPG Industries before retiring.
Don shared 57 loving years of marriage with his wife, Mary Jane “Janie” Abernathy. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he cherished time with his family and was especially proud of his three granddaughters.
Don enjoyed riding Goldwings and spending time with his dog, Blondie. He was a member of the Knights of St. John St. Wendel #282, a member of the American Legion, and a life member of the VFW. Don was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved.
Don is survived by his wife, Janie; his children, Donald Lee (Laura) and Linda Abernathy; his grandchildren, Abigail (Devin), Emily (Eli), and Victoria; his sister, Mary Jo Huff (Bill); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his twin sister, Connie.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home West, 2100 W. Illinois St., Evansville, IN 47712, and continued at church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until service time.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at St. Wendel Catholic Church, 4725 St. Wendel Cynthiana Rd., Wadesville, IN 47638. Burial and military honors will follow in St. Wendel Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Linda E. White Hospice House, 611 Harriet St., Evansville, IN 47710 or Vietnam Veterans of America.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at Linda E. White Hospice House and Deaconess Hospital ICU 3900 and 2600 Units for their compassionate care.
