Born to Howard and Mary Agnes Powers on July 2, 1947.
Don was a proud Veteran and served in the Army Logistics Command in the Vietnam War. He worked for Industrial Filter Manufacturers and Franklin Lanes, and after retirement he delivered for Zeidler’s.
He played baseball for ISUE, softball for various Evansville teams and was the shortstop for the US Army. He was inducted into the Indiana ASA Hall of Fame in 2011. Don was happiest coaching his son’s baseball and basketball teams and helping with bowling. He loved all sports and had a special place in his heart for USI Women’s and Men’s Basketball where he was the Official Timekeeper. Don served as the Past Chairman and longtime member of the USI Varsity Club. He was President of the Umpire Association. He enjoyed supporting the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears.
Church was the center of Don's life. He was an elder and member of Trinity Lutheran until its closing and then became a member of Concordia Lutheran.
Don enjoyed his Friday Turoni’s pizza crew, you know who you are, and no secrets left the table. He also enjoyed his Saturday night six-handed clabber group and was known by Fr. Ted as lucky Don, who holds all the cards. In his later years, he became a member of the Wagner family who loved and supported him until the end.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don is survived by his son, Spencer and his special friend, Paula Yarbrough.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers at River Pointe. We want to especially thank his special caregivers from Heart to Heart Hospice, Kelli and Sam. We thank you for all your support and loving care of Don.
