Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Evansville and a 1935 graduate of Central High School. She was employed at Sun Oil Company, then later as a kindergarten assistant at Harper Elementary School. She was a member of both the Morris Chapter of Eastern Star and the White Shrine for over 75 years, and also a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Dorothy was loving, thoughtful and caring toward her family and many friends, remembering without fail, their birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions by sending a card or delivering cookies she had baked and decorated.
Dorothy loved TV sports, especially IU basketball, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Tiger Woods. She enjoyed playing the piano, leading her family in Christmas carols during the holidays. She was an avid bridge player and worthy competitor throughout her life even after moving to Evansville Protestant Home.
Late in life Dorothy became a grey-haired techie, first mastering email and then FaceTime. Sundays became IPad day for her. Using her trusty device, she would check in on her 8 grandchildren around the country to see what they were doing (particularly if there was a new baby in the house) or just to tell them she loved them.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lyda Howington; her sister, Lois Rust Jennings; her brother, James Howington; and Ralph, her beloved husband of 60 years.
She is survived by a son, Robert (Betsy); a daughter, Beth Ann Mottley (Daryl); 8 grandchildren, Bo Becker (Lainie), Todd Becker (Ida), Johnny Becker (Kira), Katie Zoss (Robert), Doug Mottley (Elizabeth), Sarah Mottley, David Mottley (Sarah), and Daniel Mottley; 15 great grandchildren; a niece, Pat Cymbala; and nephew, Mike Howington (Marcia).
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held Saturday, February 26, with arrangements by Alexander Funeral Home, East Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Frist Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to thank all the many people at Evansville Protestant Home who cared for Dorothy over many years.
