Dorothy V. King passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4, 2023, at Lady Lake Senior Living and Memory Care in Lady Lake, Florida. Dorothy was born on December 26, 1929, in Boxville, Ky to the late Alvah Issac Wood and Jessie Thelma Russell. She graduated from Dixon High School in 1947, then furthered her education at Lockyear Business College, mastering shorthand and general business accounting. She later married her husband, John (Jack) I King in 1953 and worked with a neurosurgeon before settling down to raise a family.
Dorothy was a devoted mother and grandmother, never saying "no" to anyone in need and always putting others before herself. Whether volunteering with girl scouts, lending a hand with local sports organizations her children were involved in, or assisting with choir practice, her active role in her children's lives led her to touch many others through her boundless generosity. Her children, Denice and John, her three granddaughters, Heather, Tara, and Natalie, and her two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Emma, were her joy, and she was their "Nana," their rock, and their greatest supporter. Her avid storytelling was a favorite moment when they were all together.
Together with Jack, she worked at Empire Building Products until retirement in 1984. They traveled back and forth to Jupiter, Florida where they loved to spend time with her family. Their love for Florida was only matched by her love for her family, whom she followed and supported in all their endeavors.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a long-standing member of Oak Hill Church of Christ in Evansville, Indiana, and The Church of Christ in Jupiter, Florida, she served the Lord Jesus Christ with humility and grace.
She is survived by her daughter, Denice E Stevens (Mike Stevens), son John A. King (Aggie King), granddaughters, Heather N. Houser (Mike Houser), Tara J. Glaser (Joe Glaser) and Natalie J. King, great granddaughters, Sophia R. Glaser and Emma A. Glaser and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John (Jack) King, her brother, Russell Wood of Evansville, Indiana and two sisters, Mildred Watson and Camille Simpson of Kentucky.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 10, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, IN 47714. A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at the same location with Pastor Stephen Russ officiating and burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
