Elmer William Halwes Jr.
July 16, 1929 – February 8, 2021

Elmer W. Halwes Jr., 91, passed away Monday, February 8, 2021. The son of the late Elmer and Bess Halwes Sr., he was born in Evansville, July 16, 1929.
Elmer had a bachelor’s degree in history from Wabash College. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and Hadi Shrine for 68 years, and a member of Bethlehem UCC.
Elmer loved family activities, playing cards and listening to music. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing the clarinet in a dance band, playing golf, going to St. Louis Cardinal baseball games, and working in his family’s vegetable garden.
Many organizations and students have benefited from the financial generosity of Elmer and his deceased wife, including the Vanderburgh Humane Society, the University of Southern Indiana, Evansville Day School, and numerous University of Southern Indiana students through an endowed scholarship program.
Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Doris Jean Sanders Halwes; his son, Joel T. Halwes; and brother-in-law, James Sanders.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff Halwes (Lan) and Jon Halwes; and step-granddaughter, Hebing Wang.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at Bethlehem UCC Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vanderburgh Humane Society.
