Emma (Jean) Goodman, 85, of Evansville, went to meet her childhood sweetheart and husband (Fred) of 65 years at the Pearly Gates on August 17, 2013. Fred passed away in March. Jean died of a broken heart, following him just a short five months later.
She was also preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother many years ago.
Jean leaves behind a son, Keith R. Goodman of New York; nieces and nephew, Tina Ritter, Tammy Elemendorf, Becky Kloffestein, Beth Herrin, and Bill Hutton; Marilyn and Danny Atchison, relatives on Fred’s side of the family, were also a very important part of her life, and grieve her loss.
Because she was a lovable human being, there are many other people who mourn her passing. She & her husband were the cornerstones of the neighborhood in which they resided for so many years. Former neighbors who loved them and maintained a close relationship with them until the end include: Ron and Susan Jesop, Stan and Dana Newingham, Tom and Bettye Kuhn, and Jeff and Vicki Horstman. Although they never had biological grandchildren, they “adopted” the children of the neighborhood (Matt, Ryan, Bridgette, Shirley, Angie, Rick, Jesse, Ian, DJ, Brandy & Jennifer). They were loved by and honored to serve as grandparents to them all throughout their lives.
Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Jeff Long, with private burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Tuesday from 1:00 until service time at the funeral home.
Jean made many friends during her years on this earth and was surrounded by all of them during her last months, weeks, and days. In addition, gratitude is expressed to the staff of Heritage Center who came to love her as much as the rest of us, to Dr. Robert Rusche who cared for her as he would his own family, and to Carolyn Sorrels, her longtime caregiver and loving companion.
The heavens rained tears the day Jean passed, but our loss is easier to bear knowing she and Fred will spend eternity together.
Jean and Fred were both animal lovers. In honor of that, in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Vanderburgh County Humane Society, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, Evansville, IN 47710.
