Garland Aramowicz

Garland Elizabeth (Stark) Aramowicz of Evansville, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 7, 2026 at the age of 87. She was born on February 22,1939 in Evansville, Indiana where she grew up on Mesker Park Drive.

Garland graduated from Reitz High School in 1957 and graduated from the University of Evansville in 1961 (Go Aces!!). She married her high school sweetheart, Phillip Floyd Aramowicz, in July 1959. Phil preceded her in death in 2005.

She taught at Reitz High School and Bosse High School where she taught English and directed plays and musicals, leaving an indelible impact upon her pupils. She took a break from teaching to raise her two children, returning to St. Benedict Cathedral School to teach middle school Literature from 1978 until 1994 with a team whom she loved and admired. She moved to Memorial High School to teach in the English Department and direct theater projects until 2000. With her husband retired and grandchildren arriving she left teaching. When her husband passed, she returned to Memorial High to work in the Resource Accommodation Department until 2020. She lived over 50 years on Plainview Drive surrounded by wonderful neighbors who helped support her after her husband’s death.

Besides teaching, Garland actively volunteered with various organizations such as the Junior League of Evansville. She served as President for the Evansville Philharmonic Guild and Evansville Arts and Education Council. She showed her love for the arts through engagement with the Broadway Theatre League and University of Evansville Theater Society. She had wonderful adventures in the 1980’s, traveling as the narrator of the Melody Bells youth bell choir. She taught Robert's Rules of Order to nonprofit groups and political organizations, directed various community theater productions, participated in book groups and writing groups through the public libraries, enjoyed being an usher at the Ford Center, docent at the Reitz Home, bible study through Christian Fellowship Church, supporting her children and grandchildren’s interests and affiliations and hosting Camp Grandma at her long-time home on Plainview Drive in the summers.

One of the greatest blessings of Garland's life was the enduring friendship of her Chi Omega sorority sisters at the University of Evansville. The bonds she formed with her Chi Omega sisters remained strong throughout her life, providing laughter, support, and treasured memories across the decades.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers-in-law John Aramowicz and Joseph Aramowicz.

She leaves behind a fantastic cast of characters who treasure every second of time they had with her: Alizabeth Aramowicz Smith (daughter) and her husband Ian Smith (Howard, Ohio) and their three children: Alexander (Asheville, NC), Ethan (Columbus, Ohio) and Elijah (Kenyon College); Alexander Aramowicz (son) and his wife Lori Aramowicz and their three children: Phillip Joseph, Alexis, and Jonathan David Aramowicz (Des Moines, Iowa); her beloved sister-in-law Bonnie Aramowicz and nieces, Traci Robinson and Shari Thread (Evansville).

The family would like to thank the West River Legacy Campus staff and Deaconess Hospice team for the care and compassion they showed Garland in her final days.

Her love for her children and grandchildren, community and the countless students she inspired, the friendships she nurtured, and the lessons she shared will continue to enrich the lives of those who knew her. She is being buried with a quilt that was created by family, students, friends and co-workers.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m on Friday August 14, 2026, at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 W. Illinois Street, Evansville, IN 47712, officiated by Rev. Dale Beaver. Entombment to follow at Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday August 13, 2026 from 3:00 - 7:00 pm.
