

He was born on April 11, 1929, in Fickle Station, Indiana.
He attended Indiana University and graduated from Medical School in 1954.
George married Maxine Norma Wedam on June 11, 1954 and moved to Phoenix, AZ. He was an intern at Good Samaritan Hospital where his first son, David George Kimmel was born. Dr. Kimmel and his family returned to the mid-west for a residency at Wabash Employee’s Association Hospital in Peru, IN.
In 1957, he was invited to join the Navy and was stationed in Yorktown, Virginia (Fort Eustis) where his second son, Thomas Wedam Kimmel was born. While serving in the Navy, he completed residency in Anesthesiology in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1959, he joined the Anesthesia department at U.S. Naval Hospital in Camp LeJeune, NC where his daughter, Susan Kay Kimmel was born.
On leaving the Naval assignment as Lt. Commander USN where he was the chief of anesthesia at camp LeJeune, NC honorably discharged in 1961, Dr. Kimmel practiced in Arlington Heights, IL before relocating to Evansville, IN to join his longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Robert Kincaid.
He successfully completed his board certification in Anesthesiology in 1963 shortly after he joined the staff at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.
From 1968 until 1972 Dr. Kimmel relocated with his family to Rochester, Minnesota to serve as a consultant and the chairman of Nurse Anesthetist Training at Mayo Clinic. He was also an instructor at the University of Minnesota Graduate School.
He returned to Evansville, IN in 1973 to rejoin the Anesthesiology staff at Deaconess Hospital. In 1987, he joined the Evansville Surgery Center staff. Dr. Kimmel retired in June 1999, resumed practice and retired again in August 2003.
Dr. Kimmel and his wife, Maxine were founding members of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Evansville, IN.
Dr. Kimmel was preceded in death by his wife Maxine in 2003 and his son David in July of 2009. He is survived by his son Thomas W. Kimmel and wife Margaret Kimmel, both of Evansville, IN; his daughter Susan K. Kimmel and her husband Glenn V. Wright of Peachtree City, GA; his two granddaughters Mollie and Maxie Kimmel originally from Warrensburg, IL; his daughter-in-law, Signe Gregory Kimmel of Warrensburg, IL; and his dear friend, Margie Tolan of Oaktown, IN.
Visitation will be from 4 until 6pm Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Alexander East Chapel. The funeral services will be on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 2:00pm at Alexander East Chapel. Interment will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
