Geraldine B. Miles, born August 5, 1920, was greeted by her beloved husband, Kenny, to guide her to their home in heaven February 17, 2014. Gerry was eager to meet Kenny, her parents, Harvey and Anne Loraine Young, and other family members who preceded her. Waiting with her was her daughter, Barbara Barlow, and “adopted daughter”, Harriet Sheets.
Gerry was a lifelong teacher in the EVSC teaching special needs children. Her final assignment was to develop the program for the blind and visually impaired, eventually returning the children to their home schools to receive itinerant services. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, teacher's sorority and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.
Gerry and Kenny spent many great years traveling after their retirement. They spent a great deal of time at their home overlooking Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee.
Besides Barbara and Harriet, those staying behind to carry her memory are her Grandson Kenneth Barlow (Tarrah) and great grandchildren, Piper and Xander Barlow as well as her half sister, Karen Shekell (Rick). There are numerous nieces and nephews and friends gathered through the years. The family is especially thankful for Mary Gray, neighborhood friend and caregiver, caregivers from Around the Clock, the nurses and staff of St. Mary's Palliative Care Unit and Dr. Tipton who saw her through her final hours.
Viewing will be at Alexander East Funeral Home on Thursday from 3 to 7pm and 1 hour prior to services at 10:00am on Friday. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Rev Steve Buetler officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
