Obituary of Gloria J Stewart
Gloria Jean (Garrett) Stewart, 74, of Evansville, returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, September 15, 2018. She was born on April 27, 1944, in Evansville, to the late Ernest and Lucy (Webb) Garrett. She was one of thirteen children and the second oldest daughter of this union. Gloria attended grade schools in Evansville, graduating from Central High School. She married Bobby Stewart, but sadly lost her husband very early in their marriage. From this union, however, she had her first child, daughter Bobbie Ann. Being a strong woman and having an adventurous spirit, she decided to move to California where she lived for a number of years and gave birth to her second child, son David. Home soon called her back, and she returned to Evansville where her third child, son, Andre, was born. Gloria was a hard worker and steady provider for her family, working at a number of businesses, including the Stokely Cannery and US Post Office. Gloria loved a good deal, and you could often find her at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store searching for the best bargain. Gloria enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and it wasn’t unusual to see her on the METS bus with one of them, traveling to Eastland Mall or running errands around town. She was a great neighbor, always looking out for her community. Preceding Gloria in death were her parents, Ernest and Lucy (Webb) Garrett; her siblings, Carole, Charles, Darryl, Ernest, and Tyrone. Gloria is survived and deeply missed by her daughter, Bobbie Ann Alexander (Willie); sons, David D. Stewart and Andre C. Johnson (Aleesia); grandchildren, William Flemming, David Flemming, Tanika Stewart, Nia Stewart, Briana Stewart, Deja Johnson, Frederick Johnson, Naomi Johnson, and Grace Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Alayasia, D’Janique, David Jr., and Keaton; her sisters, Rosemary Rountree (Lewis), Jutton Causley (Bernard), Debra Faye Willett (Charles), Sharries Garrett; and brothers, Gary (Frida), Anthony, and Jeffery (Mary) along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other loved ones. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 22 at Memorial Baptist Church, 645 Canal Street, officiated by Rev. Adrian Brooks, with entombment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 10 am to 11 am with funeral services beginning at 11 am.
