Greta D Baird

Greta Diane Shaw Baird of Evansville, Indiana, died October 11, 2023 at the Linda White Hospice House in Evansville. Born in Evansville on November 20, 1936, Greta was the daughter of Clarence and Katherine Shaw. Greta attended the University of Evansville where she met and married in 1956, James Farrell Baird of Evansville, who preceded her in death on June 7, 1991. Also preceding her in death was her brother Clarence S. Shaw. While attending college, Greta made lifelong friendships with a group of women, forming their own bridge club for 60+ years. After spending the early years of her marriage working part time at her parent’s dry cleaning business and raising a family, Greta began working at Bristol Myers in 1975, retiring in 1993. After retirement, she volunteered as an usher at The Victory and Old National Center. Her greatest enjoyment though, came from being with her family, especially grandchildren, on holidays and birthdays. She would always call and sing happy birthday to a loved one on their special day. It wasn't a birthday until she called. Greta was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church, and had a strong faith in God. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Tim) Owens; sons, Stan (Michele) Baird, James Baird, Daniel (Sharon) Baird; grandchildren, Sam Erwin, Sarah Erwin, Chris Erwin, Zach Baird, Nathan (Shari) Baird, Matthew Baird, Olivia Baird; and great grandchildren, Lydia, Jaylynn, Mikayla, Braxton, Evelyn, Alice and Henry; niece and nephew, Eric Shaw and Amy Jones. Visitation will be held at Alexander West Chapel, 2100 West Illinois Street, Evansville, Indiana on Monday, October 16, 2023 from 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm followed by a Memorial Service. Final resting place will be next to her husband at Alexander Memorial Park at a later date. Donations in Greta’s name can be made to St. Jude and the Tri-state Food Bank.
