Gus Walter Boyken

Gus attended Bosse High School and was a lifelong, avid fan of Cincinnati Reds baseball and IU men’s basketball, a passion he passed on to his children and grandchildren.

For many years, he worked for Western & Southern Life Insurance as well as the family-owned Dupont Sunoco. However, no matter how hard he worked, he claimed his main job was being a good husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, and friend.

His good nature and friendly smile always shined brightest on Saturdays, when he had a longstanding breakfast date with friends. Additionally, following breakfast, he often participated in lengthy debates about where he and his sister’s family should go for lunch.

Family, food, and friends were not his only passions. He never missed an opportunity to attend Bob Seger or John Fogerty concerts with his son whenever they were playing in the area. Also, in his later years as a babysitter extraordinaire, he passed on his love of popcorn while watching endless episodes of Frasier with his grandsons.

Gus was preceded in death by his wife, Diane “Sweetie” McClure Boyken; his mother, Irene Dupont; his stepfather, Johnnie J. Dupont; his nephew, Jeffrey Tipton; his niece, Kristy Gallaty; his stepsister, Diana Brown; and his stepbrother, Rickie Dupont Sr.

Gus is survived by his children, Scott (Dana) Boyken and Lisa (Andrew Walker) Ashman; stepdaughter Karen (Jeff) Britton; stepson Richard (Joy) McClure; grandchildren, Hunter (Samantha) Barnett, Mason Boyken, Jaden (Wyatt Basey) Ashman, Emerson Ashman, Ryan Boyken, Lexi Ashman, Nolan Boyken, Malachi Ashman, Ezra Ashman, Caitlin (Bryan) Sacasas, and Nicholas Britton; great grandchildren Logan Sacasas, and Wade Sacasas; sister, Sue Meredith; niece, Sherrie Tipton; and nephew, Brent (Becky) Gallaty.

As for the memory of Gus, his sister said it best: “To know him is to love him.”

A Graveside Service will be held for family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1400 E. Virginia St., with Father Ted Tempel officiating.
