Helen Ann Hull Adams

March 27, 1936October 21, 2012

Helen Ann Hull Adams, 76, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Sunday morning, October 21, 2012. ALS may have taken her physical abilities from her, but it did not take her kind heart, pleasant spirit or hope for the future in the Lord. She died at home in Greensboro, NC where she had moved in April 2011 to be near her daughter.

Helen was born March 27, 1936 and lived her happy, young life with her parents Robert Winter Hull and Norma (Hurst) Hull in Connersville, IN surrounded by family and many farm animals. She graduated from Connersville High School and completed university studies at Grinnell College, in Grinnell, IA majoring in biology. She moved to the Evansville, IN area in 1968 where she worked and raised a family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Emil Franklin Adams, in 2009. Together they cared for their blended family of six children and welcomed many other children and pets into their home.

Helen and Emil were members of First Christian Church, Evansville, for many years. They served as youth sponsors went on mission trips and Helen was President of the Women’s Christian Ministries for several years. She faithfully participated in the choir and prayer ministries and ministered to many through her compassionate and generous heart. She and Emil traveled the USA and Canada via motorcycle with friends from the Southern Indiana Motorcycle Association. Her travels were always well documented by her ever present camera! They were active members of the Greyhound Pets of America, attending many parades and events with their pampered pet greyhounds, April and Bobbi.

Helen is survived by daughters Andrea Ellis (David) Schrader of Silver Lake, OH and Christen Ellis (Scott) North of Greensboro, NC. Surviving step children include Alan (Jean) Adams of Evansville; Bryan (Tess) Adams, Gary Adams and Alice (Rick) Enix, all of Georgia. Her beloved grandchildren include Eliza & Seth Schrader, Jacob & Abigail North, Erin Bayne, Tasha and Sierra Adams and two great grandchildren. Her lifelong friend and step sister, Joan Erickson (Ed) Whalen lives in Houston and step brother, David (Connie) Erickson also resides in TX.

She was a surrogate parent and grandparent to many who were blessed by her loving care. These include Monte, Terri, Damon and Devon Williams of Evansville; Mark, Becky and Betsy Whited of Evansville and Emilia Schobeiri of Chicago; Karen Kerns of Booneville; and Betty (George) Schermer of Bloomington.

Our family is grateful to Homewatch Caregivers and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for the attentive and loving care they provided for Helen in her last difficult months.

Services will be in Evansville, IN at Alexander Funeral Home-North Chapel, December 22, 2012 at 11:00 AM officiated by Pastor Jerry Clark with burial at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. Helen was integrally involved in the planning and fundraising for First Christian Church’s new building. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church Building Fund in her name; First Christian Church, 2845 Beaumont Dr. Evansville, IN 47725.

“Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And besides Thee, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73: 25-26

My contact with Helen was primarily by e-mail and phone, seeing each other personally only two or three times. Even through the flow of electrons, she was always caring and uplifting, often humorous. I was sad to sense the toll her disease was taking, and am relieved to know that she is now in the place where God is wiping away all the tears.

Helen was such a kind and gentle soul, and she loved Emil and her adopted Greyhounds. Helen was always smiling! I remember that she also made/sold Creative Memories scrapbook/albums. I'm glad that we met Helen when we lived in Evansville, IN. I'm very sad for her family's loss.
