James G. Gilland, 89, of Evansville, passed away Saturday evening 10:15PM, July 4, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his family. Known by friends as Jim, he fought a long and valiant battle against cancer. He was born in Salem, Kentucky, on October 1, 1925.
Jim served in the Navy, where an injury caused him to be honorably discharged. However, he still served his country by working in the Evansville shipyards on the now famous LST ships. He worked in home improvement for many years, and after retiring, continued with a lawn care business. He was an avid fisherman and sportsman and had a deep faith in Jesus, being a part of the Bible Center Cathedral since the 1940’s. He will be remembered as a hard working, honest, loyal, fun-loving and generous friend to many. He adored his family and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and a brother.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marion F. Gilland; son Mike (Cindy) of Gainesville, FL; daughter Becky (Machellie) of Indianapolis; grandchildren; Stephanie (Chris) Gilland Jessee, Matt (Lisa) Martin, David (Beth) Gilland, Angela (Zac) Gilland Spegal, and Allison Gilland; 6 great-grandchildren and a sister in law; Emarie Sights West of Evansville.
Funeral Services will be 11:00AM Friday, July 10, 2015, at Alexander North Chapel, officiated by Jim’s son, Pastor Mike Gilland, with grandson David Gilland assisting, and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at the funeral home.
