James Gerald Hines

He was born on January 9, 1951 in Hammond, IN to Robert and Elizabeth Hines, and grew up in a full house with six siblings.

Jim spent 30 years teaching industrial arts classes of all types at Mt. Vernon High school, and everyone who knew Jim knew that there wasn’t a handy skill that he wouldn’t teach or couldn’t do. And because of his hard-working, reliability, he faithfully served his friends, co-workers, students and family with his God-given talents and abilities. Jim lived as a role model within his community, because he’d do just about anything he could to bless others with his fix-it skills. Friends and family knew that Jim wouldn’t say no to anyone who needed his help, and everyone valued the trustworthiness of Jim and his strong work ethic. After any time spent with him, because he was gentle, encouraging and kindhearted, everyone would say, “I just love, Jim”.

After he retired, Jim worked at CFC and would keep busy building homes and doing house repairs and other odd jobs…and we all know how Jim would go, go, go not stopping til the sun went down!

Jim is preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years “Debbi”, as well as his parents and brother, Tom Hines.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kellie Snyder (Zach) and Carrie Duncan (Caleb) as well as his four grandchildren, Marshall, Wade, and Lyle Snyder and Corrine Hines. Jim was always available to spend time with his grandchildren, whether it was watching one of their sports, going to awards ceremonies, school programs, grandparent’s day, or just helping to take them somewhere.

Jim is also survived by his sisters Carol Shelton, Donna Price (Milt), Debbie Hines, Denise Hines, and Mary Beth Knapp (Mike); and his nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Alexander North Chapel with Rev. Cliff Herring officiating. Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
