I don't think there are enough words to correctly capture the profound affect my grandpa had on others and especially his family.  He was a true mentor, protector, leader, care giver, husband, father, grandfather, and in the most recent years a great-grandfather.  He touched so many people's lives, especially during his time as a swim coach. He was able to shape those who knew him into great individuals, as evidenced by the bonds he created with many over the years . He was a loyal and loving husband to my grandma and really showed our family what family and love mean. I remember loving, as I still do, looking at all of his photographs he would take of his and my grandma's vacations and adventures. I always thought it was sooo amazing that he had his very own dark room in his garage. This was definitely the cornerstone of my love for photography and I like to believe I've got his photography eye .  He lived a great and fulfilling life and missed my grandma so much; sitting in the mornings; turning on the lamp next to her pictures and having his morning coffee while "visiting" with her. Now they can truly be back together. Their love and dedication to one another will definitely transcend time for eternity. He had his quirks and liked things done "his" way. But "his" way really did work. He showed his love in many ways and know he took great pride in always having a plan and taking the worry off of others. He did this up until the very last few days. I think he knew we all saw him as "invincible" (I don't believe I ever even saw him ill my entire life) and that this transition for those left behind would be an unbelievably grief striction time. He told me, when I was lucky enough to make the trip to see him a week before his passing, that he "knew the progression and he was not afraid". I like to believe that grandma was with him and led him back to her. Now they both realize the reach they've had in this physical world and how much they will be remembered. -Kristin

Jim’s impact on my life as a coach, mentor, P.E. Advisor and friend was astronomical. Joining the swimming team in 1964 was truly a blessing. Even staying on campus to train during Thanksgiving vacation was special as Jim, Nita, Kim, and John opened their home to the team for dinner.  It was an example of how he felt about his team- Family. He was a blessing to so many. Condolences for Kim. John. and the Voorhees family. God be with you!

Kim, John, Karen and families we are thinking of you all and remembering many happy times. Jim kept the swimmers together when we were young and throughout our entire adult lives. We traveled together, laughed together, ate a lot and enjoyed life.  This group of people was a special part of my life and I am certain we would not have stayed that close if Jim had not always been looking out for us.  We will remember Jim with a smile and a beer and a caring heart.

I have a college credit in swimming from Evansville College because of Mr. Vohees(Coach). He was a  very amiable instructor and I enjoyed his class. My father, Paul Beck  was part of the Aces athletic staff with Jim for several years before retiring in 1971.  Dad highly respected Jim as a friend, teacher and coach.  I also had Jim in a lifesaving class. His class was fair and very demanding. He was an outstanding teacher.  With deepest sympathies from the Beck family!

Jim and Nita were wonderful neighbors and they will be missed.  They had so many friends and a wonderful family that they loved so much.  Love and prayers.      Glenda Ossenberg
