Janet Lynn Berman Mackay, age 77, of St. Louis, MO (formerly of Evansville) passed away surrounded by her family at home on Sunday, September 3, 2023, after a long illness. She was born on September 21, 1945 in Evansville to Louis and Bernice Berman.
After spending the majority of her life in her beloved town of Evansville, Jan moved to St. Louis, MO in 2020 to be closer to family.
She attended Indiana University where she found a second family in her Gamma Phi Beta sisters. After living briefly in Cleveland and Indianapolis, Jan returned to Evansville to raise her two daughters.
Jan had a passion for golf and played often at the Evansville Country Club, her home away from home. She was an active participant in the ladies’ 9-hole group where she made many friends and won many tournaments.
Jan also had a love of community and, over the years, volunteered frequently at her daughters’ schools, the Evansville Museum, Junior League, and other local
organizations. She also participated in PEO in both Evansville & St. Louis, founded a book group in Evansville where she participated regularly (even after moving to St. Louis), co-founded a second book group in St. Louis and could play a mean hand of bridge.
Jan will be remembered for her love of family and friends, as well as for the grace and poise she brought to every occasion and her passion for entertaining. She was known as a foodie and a consummate chef. She took pride in preparing elaborate holiday gatherings and believed every event was worth celebrating with a great meal. Jan touched the lives of many, lifting people up with her wicked wit and incredible style.
She leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life: her two children: Melissa
(Missy) Stanisljevic and husband Zoran of Charlotte, NC; Adrienne (Andi) Muralidharan and husband Aditya of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren who affectionately called her “Nanima”: Liam and Max Stanisljevic, Raghavan and Evelyn Muralidharan; sister JoAnn DePriest and husband Rex of Evansville; a cousin, niece, nephew, and friends, including her friends from her beloved bridge, book, and golf groups and sorority sisters.
A Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Alexander East Chapel officiated by Pastor Gene Backes, followed by entombment at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
