I knew John to be a godly man--a man of prayer, a man of faith, a man of humility. He will be missed by our family for the simple fact that he prayed for us every day. 

He loved the ministers of New Bethel Baptist Church, and he always seemed to have a word of encouragement at just the right time. 

I am grateful to have known John, if only for a short time. He will be missed here, but I know I will see him again one day. He rejoices even now in the glories of heaven as he is in the presence of his Savior.

To the West family, may God grant you grace and peace in the days ahead. May you know His comfort, especially on difficult days. And may you walk in wisdom, as John and the Lord would have you to.

I will also miss Ed & Edith whom we enjoyed visiting whenever we could.  They were warm, humorus, and always a joy to be with. I too am grateful for the sacrafice and service Ed gave to preserve the liberty and freedom we enjoy as Americans.

I was touched by his love for Jesus Christ and his Church whom he faithfully served.  Only God knows how many lives he touched by his Christian walk and testimony for his Lord. I believe he will hear those words from our Lord Jesus, Well done my good and faithful servant.

I know he is praising the Lord in heaven now and united again with his cherished wife, other family members and friends.

We look forward to the time when we will all be together again worshiping around the throne of God for evermore, and I pray that his sons and his family here on earth as they grieve their loss, will find comfort in that hope.

A tribute to my brother John Edward West.

He served our country to preserve freedom for myself and
others during World War II.

His love for the Lord Jesus Christ was first in his life and he expressed this in his love for his wife, children, parents, siblings and friends whether they were saved or
unsaved. Prayer and teaching the word of God was at the top of his list of things to do.

In our many miles apart durning our lifetime we never spent a lot of time together, but always enjoyed spending time with him and his family when we could.

My brother will be greatly missed by those who knew him as Dad, Grandpa, friend and Ed to his brothers and sisters.

We are so sorry to hear of the parting of your father. We are glad to know he is going on to be with both his Heavenly Father and awaiting spouse.
We know he will be missed by all and remembered joyfully for his faith filled life. Now God, and his Heavenly Host, is awaiting John's arrival, as planned in the Book of Life.
Everyone's days are numbered and that count is eventually to end. Our comfort in this knowledge is that our Loved Ones are going on to the Maker in Heaven. ALos comfort in knowing,
John and your mother will be awaiting "our" time of arrival in Heaven too, along with all those who have passed before us. To all of us left here on Earth "time" may move on slowly, but it will be but a twinkling of an eye to them in Heaven, that our eventual end will come to pass.
The ultimate goal is to live our lives with meaning and confident faith, like John and all those in Heaven did, so we may meet them there too. 
Our thoughts and love is with you and yours during this time of grieve and heavenly celebration.

In Memory of John Edward West
Today, dad is wearing some medals he earned in WWII. One of these is the Victory Medal that he and people like him earned through their own efforts and sacrifices. The Victory Medal represents the results of hard fought battles, fears and hardships that had to be overcome, pains from wounds and sickness, separation from family and uncertainty as to the future, both for the individual and for the world.
On the front of the Victory Medal is a figure of Liberation standing full length with head turned looking to the dawn of a new day, right foot resting on a war god’s helmet with the hilt of a broken sword in the right hand and the broken blade in the left hand, the inscription "WORLD WAR II" placed immediately below the center. On the reverse are the inscriptions "FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT" and "FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION" separated by a palm branch, all within a circle composed of the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1914 1945."
Dad is also wearing another medal – a Cross on his lapel. This too represents difficult battles fought, separation from family and friends, torture, hardships and an agonizing death suffered by a dedicated Christ so that both man and the world can have certainty of the future and true freedom from fear and want. Unlike the Victory Medal, this medal has no relationship or bearing on man’s effort, for it is purely a gift of love from God. On the front of the Cross are the nail holes and blood stains that remind us of the suffering and sacrifice made. The inscription associated with this medal are the words, “FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONE AND ONLY SON THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE”.
Dad never wore his Victory Medal, but he was always proud to wear the Cross. For to him it symbolized the true victory we have because of the grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness that God has shown for him and every other person through Jesus Christ.

David, Valerie, Ron, Jennifer,Tom and Amy:  Mike and I so sorry for your loss.  Uncle Johnnie was a "giant" of a man both to his church and all of his family.  He will be missed greatly.
