Born on October 31, 1935, in Evansville, Indiana, Joyce lived a full and meaningful life rooted in her deep love and devotion to family. Her prayer was always to have little ones around her and people to care for, and she was blessed to have that until the very end.
Joyce was a graduate of Reitz High School and dedicated over 30 years working in a local dental office, where she served as a chair-side assistant, office receptionist, and manager until her retirement. Over the years, she was also a proud Shriner Funster’s wife, an active church member, and a constant source of love and support to her family. She enjoyed many hobbies, including caring for her hummingbirds, quilting, gardening, and crocheting baby blankets for all of her “grands.”
She loved her family deeply and treasured every moment spent together. Whether caring for little ones- watching them play and explore, or simply sitting nearby with a warm smile, Joyce found purpose in being present through every stage of their lives. She faithfully attended wrestling matches, track meets, birthday parties, ball games, graduations, and musicals. She remained actively involved in her family’s lives and cherished time spent visiting and talking with family and friends. Joyce had a remarkable memory for details, always asking about school, work, friends, and life—and remembering it all—making each person feel truly seen, valued, and important.
Her home, affectionately known as “Grandma’s House,” was surrounded by a barn, horses, goats, chickens, and dogs, and filled with toys, sippy cups, and baby gates lovingly kept and ready for the next great-grandchild to enjoy. It was a place of laughter, comfort, and unconditional love.
Joyce is survived by her loving family, including her children, David (Roxann) Herron and Terri (David) Swain; grandchildren, Josh Maroni-Herron, Brittni (Joe) Lehman, Sean (Cassie) Herron, all of Evansville, Indiana, Jason (Heather) Swain of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Kyle (Andrea) Swain of Newport, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kylie, Xander, Cole, Zaden, Daxton, Corbin, Savannah, Colt, Ty, Everly, Kinley, Skye, and Saige; and her beloved nieces, Cynthia (Joe) Martin of McKinney, Texas, and Angela (Ryan) Williams of Westfield, Indiana, along with their families.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Harry “Joe” Herron; her parents, Charles and Kuila Barnes; her siblings, Everett “Buddy” Barnes and Sharon Dean Slack; and her great-grandson, Zarek Swain.
Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the traditions she created, and the deep sense of love she instilled in her family.
She will be greatly missed and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
