Joyce Newman lived a life of grace, kindness, and fortitude. She died Thursday, March 4, 2021 after encountering macular degeneration which slowly diminished her sight to blindness. She raised three children, Joyce (Steve), Art (deceased 2010) (Madelyn Gay), and Brent (Cordell), who survive her.
A spiritual life, her family, and close friends allowed her to remain in her home until age 96 during which it was not unusual for her to give directions regarding the exact location of items she might need. She taught those around her many valuable lessons as she encountered the challenges brought by blindness. These challenges were met with bravery and understanding without frustration or anger. She adapted to the limitations through experimentation and guidance from others who struggled with the disease or blindness.
Joyce retired from the Evansville School Corporation, Reitz High School where she served as the secretary to the principal. Her parents, Lester and Laura Barton were supportive and instrumental as she prepared for education and family life.
She was married to Melvin A. Mitchem and Bernie Newman who preceded her in death.
She continues her legacy through her family who will remember the many lessons and the guidance she gave throughout her lifetime. She is survived by grandchildren, Shane, Jacob; great-granddaughter, Emma; and step-son, Robert.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. J.T. Silence and Rev. Shane O’Neill officiating. Entombment will follow at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
She would be most appreciative of gifts made to her church, Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 5501 Washington Avenue, Evansville, Indiana 47715.
