Larry was born in Evansville, Indiana on July 19, 1942 to Robert and Irene (Heerdink) Helming. He was a 1960 graduate of Central High School. He received degrees from the University of Evansville, USI and the American Banking Institute. Larry was in the Marine Reserve from 1960-1967. He was proud to take part and be aboard Honor Flight EVV 14. He worked at Old National Bank for 35 years and retired in May 1999.
Larry was always reading and learning new things. After retirement he attained his pilot's license and built a RV Taildragger airplane, which was hangared at Skylane Airport. We had many fun trips. Larry was a great swimmer, diver, loved deer hunting, and a great golfer with trophies to show for everything. We were blessed to be able to travel to many countries and National Parks to see God's creation.
Larry met Karen at Old National Bank, and they married on August 26, 1967. When they married, they knew that they needed God in their life. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Karen (Abell); sons, his favorite older son, Ryan; and his favorite younger son, Dean (Tiffaney); and granddaughter, Addison, who made him smile; and sister, Bettye Kaster; brother-in-law, Gary Abell (Linda); nephews, Alex Abell and Jeff Helming.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Delbert.
The family would like to extend thanks to Angela Burkeen and Carrie Kensell, his caregivers, for their wonderful care of him and also the VA of Evansville.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 100 E. Michigan St. Evansville, IN. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. until service time at church.
