He served in the US Army during WWII in the European Theater and was a Bronze Star recipient and a former POW. Larry worked at Chrysler Corporation for 30 years, retiring in June of 1982. Following retirement he worked at Walther’s Golf and Fun. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Lawrence Shrode was not a man defined by circumstance. Yes, he was a veteran of the US Army and a Prisoner of War who spent capture in a concentration camp, while his family believed he had succumb to the war, but to those who loved Lawrence he was a husband, father to four, and a grandpa to 17. He was the husband that Edna could yell Larry to 100 times a day and without ever changing the tone of his voice he would answer. To his children, he was the man that would standby their side; right, wrong, or indifferent. He gave them unconditional love and guidance, taught them right from wrong, and provided them with safety and security. He was the grandpa who would bear a rhinoceros or perhaps an elephant any day, the grandpa who gave the biggest, strongest hugs, and scuffed your face with his whiskers as he kissed your cheek. This was Lawrence Shrode…a one of a kind, class act gentleman. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Edna D. (Hoffman) Shrode; 3 sisters, Bert, Tilly and Thelma; 2 brothers, Bill and Ed.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Joan Kramer, and husband Don of Huntingburg; son, Jim Shrode, and wife Mary of Michigan; daughter, Jane Waterman, and husband Jeff of Evansville; son, Jeff Shrode, and wife Leslie of Evansville; grandchildren, Rob, Donnie, and Jeremy Kramer, Eric Shrode, Lacee Harp, Zach Shrode, Ashley and Jessica Silvis, Josh and Jared Waterman, Robert Shrode, Katie Shrode, Angel, Joe, Kelly and Lacey McCallister; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Mabel Roth; nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Lawrence Judy and nurse, Carrie; Dr. Michael Zenni and nurse, Audrey; Vista Care Hospice and nurse, Brandi and Jason.
