LeRoy was born in Evansville, Indiana on July 11, 1930 to the late William and Mildred Elwood and was a proud graduate of Bosse High School in 1948 and the University of Evansville in 1978 as he wanted his daughters to know he realized the importance of higher education and self-improvement. He became a member of the Indiana Army National Guard in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1963 at the rank of First Lieutenant. He was employed at several different companies including Fisher Novelty Company, International Steel, and Producers Warehousing. He joined the Industrial Contractors Inc (ICI) family in 1963 and retired as the Data Processing and Payroll Manager in 1993.
He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 8, and Data Processing Management Association. He served on the boards of the United Way (known as the Donut Man to the ICI building sites during the annual United Way Drives), YMCA, Camp Carson, Evansville Philharmonic Chorus and the Conrad Baker Foundation. He served as a teacher/mentor for “Project Business” for Junior Achievement in the EVSC. He held many positions in the Evansville Bend Sail & Power Squadron specifically in the areas of leadership and boating safety.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Elwood. He is survived by his wife, Janice of 51 years, daughters Jennifer West (Cecil) of Evansville, Indiana, Sara Purviance (John) of Burlington, Colorado and Samantha Witte (Jeff) of Evansville, Indiana and his grandchildren Emily, Julie, Lisa, Eric (Michelle), Marc, Lauren (Rv), Cameron, and Catelyn and great grandchildren Liv, Lily and Porter.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 4pm to 8pm at Alexander East Funeral Home, 2115 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville, Indiana and again from 9 AM until service time on Friday at the church.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM on Friday, October 12, 2018 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1811 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville, Indiana with Reverend Tom Wenig officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Oakhill Cemetery.
