On December 4, 2021 Jackie Alles gladly kept her promise to her daughter, Mary Jane, and joined her in heaven.
Mary Jacqueline Schmitt was born to Theresa Kalkbrenner Schmitt and Walter Andrew Schmitt on June 27, 1927. She was a graduate of Reitz Memorial High School and Evansville College, where she met and stayed in touch with many lifelong classmates. In 1950 she married Charles Joseph Alles, her dancing and bridge partner for life, in St. Theresa Catholic Church. They shared their lives together for 67 years before Charlie’s death in 2018. Together they raised three children, first on West Franklin Street, and then in their Russell Avenue home for 60 years. Here they were surrounded by dear neighbors and a revolving door of energetic children.
Charlie commented that Jackie lived for her children and grandkids. She supported them in all of their activities in grade school, high school, at DePauw and Purdue. She was an enthusiastic fan when it came to her family and followed them and their adventures as if they were her own. Nothing could bring her more joy than cheering them on in all their endeavors. “Climb Every Mountain”, from the “Sound of Music”, was a familiar message to her loved ones. She taught all those, whom she loved, to follow every rainbow, till they found their dreams.
Jackie’s faith was evident by all who knew her. She was a true child of God. She faithfully attended mass at Sacred Heart and St. Boniface. Despite her dementia, Jackie would recite the many prayers and hymns from her childhood. She loved singing and would give a gentle nudge to her children if she sensed a lack of their enthusiasm during the mass.
Jackie was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart/St. Boniface. She and her husband were honored to represent their fellow parishioners as Brute’ Society recipients.
Jackie will be remembered as a loving wife, a wonderful mother, an adoring mother-in-law, a grand and great-grandmother, and a precious friend.
Jackie is survived by sons, Charles Jack (Marcia) and Gary (Kim); grandchildren, Ashley, Charles William, and Greg (Hanna) and great-grandson, Parker. She is further survived by her godchildren, Carla Kissel and Patrick Singleton.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Celebration on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 2701 West Franklin Street in Evansville, Indiana with Fr. John Brosmer officiating. Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Donations, in Jackie’s memory, if desired, may be made to West Side Catholic School Tuition Fund at 2031 West Michigan Street, Evansville, Indiana, 47712.
