Born to parents Charlie and Anna Bell Crowley on March 8, 1924, Sue was raised on a small tobacco farm in Graves Co., KY. She spent her childhood working “just like the boys” in the tobacco field and helping her mother corral her brothers, Jesse (deceased), J.W. (deceased), and Bobby Joe Crowley (deceased).
At 17, Sue met her lifelong love, Juett Porter. They married that same year in 1941, when Juett was drafted into the United States Army. Always devoted, she embarked on a solo cross-country journey to join her husband at the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, where they began their married life.
After her husband's discharge from the military, the couple settled near Paducah, KY where they started their family with their firstborn Larry's arrival in 1945. The family relocated to Evansville, IN in 1953. Like any couple hoping for a little girl, Juett and Sue welcomed two more boys, Roger and David.
Luckily, Sue’s dream came true when her first granddaughter arrived in 1969. She was a devoted grandmother to six grandchildren in all, followed by several great and great-great grandchildren.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband after 55 years of marriage, but always found comfort in the fact that she would someday join her life partner again when her earthly days were through.
She was a strong, determined, and fiercely independent woman – she prided herself on being a “tough old bird” no matter what came her way. She was a faithful Southern Baptist all her life and spent her Sundays at church, or held her own “service” with Billy Graham’s gospel program on the television. She enjoyed her daily soap operas, solitaire at her kitchen table, and decorating her walls with beautiful cross-stitch pieces, but her favorite activity might have been teasing her children and grandchildren.
Always dependable, her family and friends could count on her for a glass of sweet tea or a slice of her coconut cake. She crocheted over 75 baby afghans over the years and made sure each one of the grandchildren had a little pink or blue blanket when they entered the world.
She is survived by her sons Larry, Roger, and David Porter, and their partners, Gina Porter, Terri Porter, and Vicky Angel, her grandchildren (Kristi, Cory, Lanette, Jamie, Meagan, and Sara), and her many great- and great-great grandchildren.
She is beloved by so many and will be missed every day.
Funeral services will be held at Alexander Funeral Home - North Chapel on Tuesday, August 13 at 1:00pm, delivered by her nephew Paul Crowley. The family will receive friends during visitation on Tuesday, August 13 from 11am to 1pm at the funeral home.
