

Mel was born on June 4, 1922, in Omaha, Nebraska, to the late Albert and Rose Peterson.
A 1938 graduate of Benson High School, Mel earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of San Francisco, a master’s degree in English from the University of California, a master’s degree in history from Indiana State University, and a doctor of humane letters degree from the University of Evansville. After retiring from Chevron Oil Company in San Francisco in 1972 at age 50, Mel lived in Sonoma, California, for 10 years, serving as president of the Sonoma League for Historic Preservation.
Mel served in the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Station and the Pensacola Naval Air Station for four years. Mel moved to Evansville in 1989. He was a life member of the University of Evansville’s Board of Trustees and was instrumental in acquiring Harlaxton Manor in Grantham, England, from the Jesuits. Mel assisted in administering Harlaxton College for many years, making numerous trips to England.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother (Gene), and close friend William Ridgway.
He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Finney; and many nieces and nephews. His family extends special thanks to the caregivers from Home Instead.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at Neu Chapel on the campus of the University of Evansville. A celebration of Mel’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m. His final resting place will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
