OBITUARY

Michael Eugene Cannon

January 11, 1943July 26, 2014

Michael “Mike” Eugene Cannon, 71, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014. He was born January 11, 1943, to the late Myron Eugene and Rosemary (Zuspann) Cannon.

He graduated from Bosse High School in 1961, and attended Bethany College, Bethany, W.Va.; Butler University, Indianapolis, In.; University of Evansville, In.; and Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, In., earning degrees in Psychology and Sociology.

Mike was deeply committed to the things of God. Having at one time studied for the ministry at Bethany, he served throughout his life as a lay preacher and witness for the opportunities God presents us all each day. As a musician who especially loved singing, he shared his gift as song leader, soloist, and choir member at every church where he attended. Mike was also Past President of the Evansville Songfellows, where he sang in quartets and in the SPEBSQUA chorus.

In his youth, Mike loved the Boy Scouts of America, and went on as an adult to share his passion and knowledge as a scout leader, working with inner city youth. Mike also enjoyed woodworking, electronics, and amateur ham radio. Mike Cannon always had a joke to tell. He had a way of making you laugh even if you didn't want to. His sense of humor and outlook on life were great examples to all who knew him. Mike would be eager to learn your name when he met you; he would then remember, and call you by your name as long as he knew you. Mike was dependable, and had a sense for detail in everything he did. It was said of him, "Ask Mike what time it is, and he'll tell you how to build a watch." In recent years, Mike had reconnected with friends from his high school years. He leaves behind a loyal alumni group from the BHS Class of ’61, where he was News Editor, host for the quarterly luncheons, and helped diligently with the 50th Class Reunion.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Rosemary Cannon.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Childs of Nashville, Tn.; and his three children: Michael (Lisa) Cannon II of Newburgh, In.; Christi (Jamie) Cannon-Allen of Evansville, In.; and William (Jessica) Cannon of Evansville, In. He will be missed by his grandchildren: Katlin Cannon-Sprague of Louisville, Ky.; Christopher Cannon of Newburgh, In.; Rachelle Allen and Emily Allen of Evansville, In.; and Alexander Cannon and Lorelei Cannon of Evansville, In., all of whom he adored and loved.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Friday, August 1, 2014, at Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Friday from 11:00 AM until service time at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Condolences may be made online at www.AlexanderWestChapel.com.
