Michael A. Gates

Michael Andrew Gates, 71, of Evansville, passed away Thursday, April 07, 2016, at Charlier Hospice Center. He was born March 30, 1945, in Evansville, IN, to the late Robert Lyman, Sr. and Corrine (Biggs) Gates.

He was a 1963 graduate of Reitz High School where he played football and was a member of the 1962 State Championship football team, which was both undefeated and unscored upon. Michael was an Air Force Veteran and K9 Military Policeman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, IU basketball and Reitz football. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa and brother.

Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; grandson, Dustin; brothers, Robert Lymon Gates, Jr. and Ralph E. Gates; sisters, Patsy R. Wells; and his parents.

He is survived by his daughter, Marva (Scott) Smithler; sons, Sean (Heather) and John Gates; grandchildren, Amanda Chism, Jacinda Dider, Shyanne Chism, Paige and Caberon Gates; great-grandchildren, Dustin Owens, Kent Dider; brothers, Lawrence (Bonnie) Gates of Newport, WA and Joseph C. (Dorothy) Gates, Sr. of Chandler, IN; sisters, Sharon (Mike) Bragassa of Conroe, TX and Sandra (Harold) Matthews; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Alexander West Chapel, officiated by Rev. Terry Gamblin, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Friday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
