Nora I. Whitehead

Nora spent most of her life in Georgia before later moving to Evansville, Indiana.

In 1955, Nora married her beloved husband, Virgil Whitehead, a sailor whom she said "swept her off her feet." Together they shared 61 years of marriage, a life marked by devotion and faithfulness, until Virgil’s passing.

Nora’s life was anchored by a deep Christian faith and was a long standing member of First Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia. She had many Scriptures memorized; a testament to the strength of her belief and the constancy with which she lived it. For more than 20 years, she also lifted her voice in the church choir, offering her time and spirit in service and song.

In her early years, Nora found joy in simple pleasures such as movies, ice skating, roller skating, music, dancing, and swimming. Above all, she cherished her family. Many will remember her for her banana pudding—made with care, and her favorite dish to take to Church events.

Nora was extraordinarily kind, caring, and generous, and she truly never met a stranger. Her quiet grace and openhearted manner left a lasting imprint on the many lives she touched.

Nora was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Whitehead; her parents, William and Martha Stauber; and her sister, Claire Yank.

She is survived by her son, Freeman (Betsy) Whitehead; her daughter, Tamah Whitehead; her grandchildren, Daniel Whitehead and Sarah Whitehead; her nephews, Floyd (Connie) Whitehead and Clifford Yank; her sister, Patricia (Lewis) Day; and her niece, Lisa Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Alexander North Chapel, officiated by Dale Beaver, with burial to follow in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. until service time on Monday at the funeral home.
